Today has been a rollercoaster day, emotionally.
Today, we decided to move PG to a private school next year. It is a tiny school, devoted to gifted kids, and designed to help them learn how to navigate the world. While 1st grade has not been as painful for us as K was, it hasn't been all roses either. In the new school, her bright-kid quirks will not be viewed as problems, and she will have more freedom to make choices. As it is a private school, there's no CSAP accountability, which means no teaching-for-the-test. In our minds, this is a great thing. Both The Hubby and I, upon visiting the school, felt an enormous sense of relief that we had finally found the place for our gifted, but challenging, kiddo. She had a visiting day there 2 weeks ago, and they loved her, and all we have to do now is paperwork. Some of you have been around long enough to remember the agony of the first Fancy Private School, the one that didn't let her in, and I can't tell you how much I wish we had known about this school back then. It's not as fancy, but it does seem to be exactly the right spot for her. And if it's not, she can always go back to her current school. That's the beauty of attending your neighborhood public school- they have to let you in.
Today, right after making that decision, I found out that one of my best friend's fathers died. I don't know what to do to help her, but I am so sad. She managed to get back home before he died, but not before he slipped into a coma, and so did not get to have a last conversation with him.
Today, I don't have any quilty goodness to show you. Last night, we got a call that Bella might be on her way (we're the back up babysitting plan for Bella's big sister, one of PG's best friends and also our neighbor). So we waited for the phone to ring again, but it never did... Bella has decided to stay put long enough for me to finish her quilt, I suppose. Instead, I can show you some knitting. I finished a sock!
One purple jaywalker, made with Lorna's Laces amethyst stripe from that mill end bunch I bought. The second is already on needles...
I need to get so much better at sock photography. When the pair is complete, I will.
Oh, and guess what- PG is STILL sick. Her fever keeps coming back- she has to go to the DR tomorrow if it comes back again today. And The Hubby is miserable too. TB, defying all logic,is a happy and healthy little guy. Crazy. I am much improved, though I still have the Phoebe's Voice. I am hoping we all get better soon. The poor kid has missed a full week of school now!
*wink wink* it's not like she's missing much at school anyway right? I'm sorry to hear about your friend's father. It's always tough to feel so useless when someone is going through something emotionally wrenching.
You make the nicest socks!

Oh no...get well wishes from our house to yours! Whenever Baby K gets a fever it lasts 4 days. I hope she is done with winter germs cuz I'm out of sick days, and hubby has zero also.
Love the socks! I'm about to start a pair of Jaywalkers myself :-)

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend's father. May she and her family have strength in this hard time, and find some peace in remembering the wonderful times they had with him during his time on earth.

Glad that you've got the school situation for next year sorted out. I really hope it goes well, the school sounds fabulous.
Your jaywalkers are stunning, LOVE the purple colour.
I don't think there's much that you can do for your friend to make it better, the best thing is to just be available for her to talk, or sit in silence with.

I hope the new school is the perfect fit you are looking for! The other week they told me at pre-school that they were concerned that Little Boy doesn't know his letters yet. Really, I asked - what makes you say that? He doesn't trace his letters. I see - well, did they realize that he is already reading and pretty good too? I told them that he was pulling the wool over their eyes! Well, turns out he doesn't do the tracing exercises because he doesn't feel like they give him enough time to do a good job. I can see that I will probably have some of the same headaches in my future that you are having now. Fingers crossed for this school for you guys!
Cheers!

I hope that the school is all that you hope it to be. So sorry to hear about your friends father, my best suggestion would be is to just let her know you're there for her.
